Here are a few pictures of the Dios de los Muertos skull commission. I've used fairly color true under glazes for the piece. I'm not going to fire it until I get the final ok from Shannon.

Manifest Destiny II

Well, all of the masks made it through bisque firing. I've posted pictures of the bisqued masks with bowls using various shino experiments, to give an idea of where I'm going next. I've got a ton of glazing and firing left to do but we are moving in the right direction...

"Manifest Destiny"

Manifest Destiny is the title of this work in progress. There are 50 ceramic skull masks that will be juxtaposed with a single mask separated from the grouping. Each will be high fired to cone 10-12 and glazed using various shino recipes I've been experimenting with. I plan to use these different glazes to create individualized tribal pattering on the masks in the grouping. The single mask juxtaposed to the group will also be glazed with shino but will mimic an American flag. My goal is to create a stark visual icon that imparts both individual humanity and the conceptual foundations of Manifest Destiny. My intent is not to define duality or to critique it but to challenge on an instinctive level the conceptual cause and effect of predestination.

Woodfire shino experimentation...

The surfaces on these bowls look great...but...most of them have some serious glaze faults as far as functionality...a lot of crawling and some pinholing. These factors won't matter on my skull masks...in fact they will probably be enhanced by it...I hope...

Muertos...

I'm starting an entirely new body of work...not sure how much detail I want to go into yet conceptualy but suffice it to say I have a plan. My current intent is to shift my shino experimentation to sculptural forms while continuing my explorations in functional ceramics. I've included pictures of a new mask series that will use these types of shino variations shown in my bowls. The other skulls are whimsical experimentation with no expectations...well that's where my heads at right now anyways...
